before the trip

So I have 12 days till I leave and i am so extremely excited to go back to Africa!! This summer I spent time with my Shosho (grandmother in kikuyu) and i recognized my love for the place no matter how poor and desolate it is.  I now know I took it for granted while i lived in Uganda when i was younger.  The flight out there on the other hand is not as pleasant as the stay...  My flight itinerary includes Boise, Seattle, Paris, Amsterdam, Nairobi, and finally Kilimanjaro.  But before I even dreamed about leaving, I had to prepare for the months of living in the villages of Tanzania.  This includes buying everything from deodorant to granola bars to shirts that wont be too hot in 100+ degree weather.  Once I do arrive out I will be joining Shosho and teach computers and english at her ever enhancing secondary school she created 11 years ago. The land started out as barren and dry where nothing could grow.  She poured every penny and minute into achieving her dream of an oasis for the children of Mutakuja.
The school has approximately 150 students attending and 5-7 teachers as of July 2011.  The small farms that she has developed infront of the main building sustain the students' meals for 2 of the 7 days and she constantly tries to overcome the main hinderance of tilling the new soil which hasn't seen rain in over 3 years.  After receiving her pump and well as a donation 2 years ago she has been able to plant more lettuce, tomatos, beans, and bananas.  I am so ecstatic to see how the tree project she started in July is thriving! Her 40 seedlings should be well on their way to becoming small trees that is if they make it through the hot season which we are in presently.   I hope that all my time there can be well spent and help the inhabitants of Tanzania!
